What Are Trigger Point Injections

Ever had a sore, painful knot in your muscle? If so, then you’ve dealt with a trigger point before. You may massage the knot hoping that it will ease up and go away; unfortunately, simply rubbing the knotted muscles probably won’t be enough to ease your pain. Trigger points form when muscles tense up and can’t relax. When this happens our medical professionals offer trigger point injections that help to reduce inflammation while helping the muscles release.

When are trigger point injections useful?

Trigger point injections can be used to alleviate muscle pain just about anywhere in the body (we most commonly treat the back, neck, and legs). Trigger point injections can also be a great way to treat,

  • Tension headaches
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Myofascial pain

How does a trigger point injection work?

When a knot develops in the muscle this causes intense pain that flare-ups with activity. When the muscles aren’t able to relax on their own, trigger point injections are used by our medical team to help release tight, tense, and even spasming muscles to reduce inflammation and pain. Trigger point injections contain different kinds of medications to help alleviate muscle pain depending on the severity and the symptoms you are experiencing. Trigger point injections may include,

  • Lidocaine or a local anesthetic to numb the area

In cases where the patient is dealing with trigger points within deeper tissue, dry needling may be a better option since this can target deeper tissues to alleviate myofascial trigger points and provide better relief.

When will I experience relief? How long will the relief last?

It only takes about 15 minutes to administer the injections. Most patients will experience some degree of relief immediately after treatment, but it takes about 2-3 days to see the final results of the treatment. Some people may experience weeks or even months of relief after a single round of trigger point injections. Trigger point injections are also combined with other medical clinic treatments and therapies such as massage, acupuncture, stretching exercises, and physical therapy.
